The Healthcare Reform Law: How Will It Impact Your Practice?

Everyone has been talking and worrying about the sweeping healthcare reform for the past year, but now that it is finally here, every provider needs to understand what effect will the new law have on his or her practice.

The legislation will affect New York physicians in several key ways. To be sure, the exact ways in which the legislation will impact your practices will depend in great measure on how it will be implemented. However, the four major areas of impact are the following: first, the legislation will greatly expand the pool of potential patients by providing health insurance to individuals who previously did not have access to care for financial reasons; second,it will significantly expand enrollment in Medicaid while simultaneously raising reimbursement rates; third, it will provide bonuses on top of current Medicare reimbursement rates in certain key areas; and fourth, it deals with widespread health insurance industry abuses and inefficiencies.

Physicians and other healthcare providers should get well-educated as to the impact that the federal healthcare reform will have on their practice and patients, take advantage of the opportunities the new legislation presents, and be aware of its potential pitfals.
